Prior to 1952, Australia had every kind of neck-to-knee cover all and it had nothing to do with sun protection. So in 1952 when a fashion designer by the name of Laura Stafford designed the first bikini swimsuit for her fashion parade at the Sands Resort on Queensland’s Gold Coast, it caused a massive eruption of public opinion, personal appreciation and furore such as that currently being generated from the Nuclear testing being carried out on the Pikinni Atoll in the Marshall Islands by the United States.
Piki meant “surface” and “ini” meant coconut to the indigenous Marshall Islanders but it has always been pronounced Bikini and is a very small island located in the Marshall Island group of the south pacific.
In 1952, the US was still carrying out their Nuclear testing and making huge waves around the world from a little bit of an Island, so Laura Stafford thought it to be the most appropriate name for her newly designed little bit of a swimsuit. She thought the moral outcry would be nearly as great as the noise from the nuclear blast and even to this day, the moral outcry is still often heard.
Today’s bikini is much, much briefer than it was originally. When the bikini was first paraded onto a Gold Coast beach at Surfers Paradise in 1952, the beach inspectors removed the model off the beach for indecent exposure. So she came back again the next day with another six models all wearing Bikinis and this went on for days and days with more and more models, then the women in the general public started wearing bikinis, so they were slowly, slowly accepted. I think the beach inspectors probably got tired of asking women to remove themselves off the beach for indecent exposure and being howled down by the appreciative menfolk.
I think what finally gave the seal of approval to the Bikini was the Gold Coast City Council when they installed “Meter Maids” all dressed in scanty bikinis’ and going around town putting coins into expired parking meters. So the bikini got its name from an adventurous and brave little woman fashion designer tired of wearing swimsuits designed by a man. DC has some great new skate shoes for the coming 2008 holiday season! I’m going to give a brief run down of the new series and let you in on which ones are my favorites and why.
The winter collection has 11 killer new shoes to chose from. Some with a more old school look and feel to them. Super Suede seems to be the material of choice. Along with light materials, bold color combinations and simple clean graphics. The collection has a number of mid- hi tops like the Mantrca 3 MID s. Overall some really cool shoes to choose from and probably has something for every skater.
Now, without hesitation here are my favorite picks from the new 2008 DC Shoes Winter Series!
GALLANT S SE This is the long awaited new signature shoe series from DC and Plan B pro Ryan Gallant. They come is a striking light blue color and feature Super Suede Plus, which is a super re enforced suede that while tough keeps a great look and feel. They of course come with a lot of the great features you would expect from DC breathable materials,foam padded collar and elastic tongue holders. I realy love these shoes for the great color and supreme grip sole.
PREMIER S This is a serious skate shoe and my favorite from this new collection. The Premier S features clean graphics, awesome colors a TPR toe guard and an innovative, shock absorption heel airbag system.
These shoes are on the cutting edge of what’s on the market today.
MANTECA 3 M S These for me are all about the color and style. They have a killer retro mid hi look and come in some sick color combos such as Black and Gold and Blue and Orange. A scratch and tear resistant sticky sole, elastic tongue holders and reinforced upper makes them a fuctional skate shoe and not just a good looking one!
SMITH 2.0 SSE Check out the newest shoe series from pro skater Ryan Smith. These shoes have a sort of matte fadded suade look and come in all one solid color. Black or Dark Chocolate. Both are very nice. Like most of Dc’s Shoes the Smith 2.0 SSE feature excellent cupsole construction, foam padded tongue and collar along with awesome grip and flex. If you want a smooth, classy look then these are the skate shoes for you.

Every woman has known the challenge of buying just the right purse. It can’t be too big and heavy or the chiropractor is upset. It can’t be too small or it becomes useless. Just like Baby Bears’ chair, bed and porridge it has to be just right.
I am the self-confessed mother of a daughter with a purse fetish. Hilary’s purse collection is the subject of a strange mixture of awe, disbelief and envy. She advises the purse-challenged. She gives purses as gifts. She is a connoisseur who also loves a bargain.
Through a lifetime of using purses I’ve had all kinds. Big ones and little ones, clutches and shoulder bags, expensive ones and cheap ones. I used to be a bit of a snob. If it wasn’t leather I didn’t want it. That’s plain crazy. Who would want to rule out micro-fibres, straw, faux leather, fabric? Or the latest fashion colors and finishes?
Purses and totes are utilitarian, fashion statements that most women can’t do without. The ones with multiple pockets and sections help me organize my life, planner, receipts, ID, keys, business cards, coupons and lipstick. It becomes a portable, mini command centre. In it is a little notebook with the titles of books I have. This keeps me from buying duplicates. Paint and fabric swatches and key measurements of furniture or rooms help keep renovation projects on track. Maintaining a list of replacement ink/roller cartridge numbers for the fax and printer saves time and buying mistakes.
In purses with just one cavernous space everything ends up at the bottom. It ain’t pretty finding anything in one of those. And if you do, it’s probably damaged.
In an effort to lighten the hold on my shoulder, I’ve moved to smaller purses. Because I still need all my stuff I also carry a tote bag. It may never get out of my vehicle but it’s got reading material, cell phone, shoes, makeup bag and any other specifics I may need that particular day. I’ve also got totes dedicated to particular projects– work , art card portfolio, painting portfolio, university course work, day trip to the city.
If I can buy a bag I love on sale, yeehaw. If I can buy a bag while on holiday, great memento. If I can buy used tote bags at a garage sale or second-hand store to transport paintings I feel righteous.
Perhaps the only person who rivals me in my love (and use) of bags and totes is an instructor I had many moons ago at Lakeland College’s summer program in Vermilion. Betty was a calligraphy master and a very generous teacher. She carried a huge selection of paper, quote books, paint and calligraphy supplies in a variety of bags, totes, wheeled cases. The vanity license plate on her van was “Bag Lady.”
The next time you find a purse or tote calling your name, answer the call by buying a new one for your collection. You’ll be glad you did.
